Downtown is the closest major destination to San Diego International Airport. The drive typically follows North Harbor Drive along the bay, which means most trips avoid the freeway entirely.
Because the distance is short, the part of the trip that actually varies is the airport itself: terminal curbside congestion, waiting on checked bags, and cruise or convention days that put extra traffic on Harbor Drive. A scheduled pickup removes the rideshare queue from that equation.
Downtown drop-offs are rarely just "downtown."
