Route overview
Orange County starts roughly 60 miles north of San Diego and extends well beyond that, so the trip length depends heavily on where you are going. San Clemente is a much shorter drive than Anaheim.
Most routes run north on I-5 through Camp Pendleton and along the coast, with I-405 or SR-73 used for parts of central and coastal Orange County.
The corridor carries heavy commuter traffic, and the stretch north of Irvine is often the slowest portion. Time of day changes this drive more than almost any other factor.
Why reserve
Orange County trips are split between business travel and family travel, and both benefit from a fixed plan.
Irvine, Newport Beach and the surrounding business corridors draw regular travel from San Diego for meetings and client visits.
Travelers occasionally fly out of John Wayne (SNA) or Long Beach (LGB) rather than SAN, which makes a scheduled ground transfer necessary.
Orange County beach towns and theme park destinations are common family trips, usually with plenty of luggage.
Weddings, conferences and events across Orange County are easier to attend when the group travels together.
Vehicle options
One passenger in a sedan, a family in an SUV, eight travelers in a passenger van or an accessible vehicle — the vehicle is matched to the trip, not the other way around.
