Orange County starts roughly 60 miles north of San Diego and extends well beyond that, so the trip length depends heavily on where you are going. San Clemente is a much shorter drive than Anaheim.
Most routes run north on I-5 through Camp Pendleton and along the coast, with I-405 or SR-73 used for parts of central and coastal Orange County.
The corridor carries heavy commuter traffic, and the stretch north of Irvine is often the slowest portion. Time of day changes this drive more than almost any other factor.
